Shane Cavanagh is a cellist who studied cello in the Royal Irish Academy of Music until 2012. During this period he studied towards a Bachelor of Arts Degree at NUI Maynooth before going on to complete a Master of Arts Degree in Performance and Musicology at the same university. Shane also possesses an Associate Diploma in Violoncello Teaching from the RIAM and a Professional Master of Education from DCU.
Since 2011 Shane has worked in various community-based music projects based in primary schools around Dublin. Work in these projects includes facilitating individual lessons, small group lessons, and large group lessons of up to 36 children learning violin, viola, violoncello and double bass all at the same time. Some of these projects encompass multiple generations within a combination of primary school orchestras, secondary school orchestras, and adult ‘late starter’ orchestras. Other music organisations Shane has worked with in the past include the Dublin Youth Orchestras, Cross Border Orchestra, Irish Institute of Music and Song, and Royal Irish Academy of Music. Shane has acted as an examination invigilator for the RIAM as well as for the Department of Education.
Shane has previously prepared his cello students up to and including RIAM Grade 8 as well as for their Junior and Leaving Certificate examinations. Shane has also taught individual violin and viola students up to Grade 3 using the Suzuki method, before preparing them for auditions at the RIAM and TU.
Shane gives lessons in musicianship (music theory), group ukulele, group tin whistle, Junior Cycle Music and Leaving Certificate Music.
