Barbara is a professionally qualified piano teacher, concert organist and church organ teacher.
She lectures in piano at TU Dublin Conservatoire, and teaches piano and music theory at Waltons New School of Music, Dublin. She also teaches piano, church organ and music theory privately, based in the Dublin 14 area.
She has over thirty years of experience teaching students of all ages, and at all levels from beginner to advanced. She helps students to prepare for graded and diploma exams (RIAM, ABRSM, LCM), and for Junior and Leaving Cert practical exams. Leisure pianists and organists are also welcome to learn without taking examinations. She has a particular interest in mentoring piano teachers who wish to develop their teaching skills further. She also tutors parish organists of all denominations.
Barbara specialises in helping students to develop ways of learning music that will make practice at their instrument effective and rewarding, and in teaching pianists and organists how to read / sight-read written music in ways that will increase their accuracy and fluency. She also helps students who prefer to learn favourite pieces by ear rather than by reading music, or who want to be able to do both; and teaches them how to start improvising music of their own. Her overall aim is to help students of keyboard instruments to enjoy learning and playing music, whatever their current level, and whether in classical, pop, jazz or video-game genres.
Music theory can be taught either as part of instrumental lessons or separately.
One-to-one lessons are taught in person and online. Barbara is Garda vetted, has had certified training with the HSE and Barnardos in Child Protection Awareness, and operates with a child protection policy. She is a member of EPTA Ireland.
